Ways You Can Vote

Mailed Advance Voting: If you are unable to vote on Election Day you can still cast your vote by completing an advance ballot. The deadline to complete an advance ballot is noon the day before Election Day. You can have your ballot mailed to you starting 20 days before the election. Click here to fill out your application for an advance ballot. Once you receive your ballot, please be sure and follow the deadlines for submitting your mailed advance ballots to the Clerks' office - check the calendar here. With mailed advance voting, any registered voter can vote by mail before Election Day.

In Person Advance Voting: With advance voting, any registered voter can also vote in person before Election Day. You may also vote in person in the county election office at the County Clerk's office starting at least by the Tuesday before any election day. The following locations in Ellis County offer "in person" advance voting on these days for the Primary Election:

  • July 23 thru Aug. 1, 8 am - 5 pm, Ellis Co. Courthouse, Hays (not open weekends)
  • August 4, 2008, 8 am - 12 pm, Ellis Co. Courthouse, Hays

Voting Calendar: Click here for your 2008 election dates.

Voting hours. State law requires that polling places open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. on Election Day; however, the county may open the polls earlier and close them later. All voters who are in line at 7:00 p.m. are allowed to vote.

Poll Locations: If you would like to know where you are supposed to vote on Aug 5th, consult this page for your poll location. If you don't know your precinct and want to check for it online, go to Kansas VoterView. At Kansas VoterView, be sure and type in your full legal name and your current address. It will give you a new page listing your registration information and where your polling place will be in the upcoming election. In any case, if you are confused or don't understand where to vote, contact me for further assistance. Just drop me an email or call me at 785 735 VOTE (8683). Please leave name, address and return phone number and I will call you back with your precinct and voting location.

How to make certain your vote counts? Be sure to have proper identification with you when going to vote. This will ensure that you are able to vote a regular ballot. It is also important to follow instructions carefully. Don't over vote. If you are completing a paper ballot pay attention to the number of candidates you can select. When using the optical scan or touch screen voting machines you will be alerted to any errors on the ballot and you will have to correct the ballot before it will be accepted. Each polling place will have specific instructions for the method of voting.

Special Needs: Sick, disabled or illiterate voters may ask for and receive assistance in applying for and casting advance voting ballots. Don't forget, all ballots must be received in the Clerk's office by the close of polls on each election day!

Voter Rights: In preparation for the elections, you may also wish to become familiar with your Voter Rights and Responsibilities (espaņol) and this Notice to Voters (espaņol). Remember, you always have the right to:

  • Ask questions;
  • Request a ballot if you are:
    • a United States citizen,
    • 18 years or older,
    • a Kansas resident, and
    • registered to vote;
  • Vote a provisional ballot if your name is not on the voter registration list or if there is another question about your qualifications to vote;
  • Vote in an accessible voting place, and request assistance if needed;
  • Review a sample ballot before voting;
  • Mark your ballot privately and free from coercion or intimidation;
  • Receive instructions on how to contact the appropriate officials if these rights are alleged to have been violated;
  • Receive a ballot if you are in line at the time the polls close;
  • Obtain up to two replacement ballots if yours is mismarked or spoiled;
  • Occupy the voting booth up to five minutes if others are waiting; and
  • Have your ballot count if it is cast legally and timely.
