Register to Vote

If you have not yet registered to vote, please do! All voter registration application (espaņol) forms must be submitted to the Ellis County Clerk's Office. You may download them using these links (English, Spanish) and then either mail or hand deliver the completed forms to the Clerk's office. Normally, the deadline to register to vote is the fifteenth day before any election, but please check this schedule.

Is your registration up-to-date? To find out online if you are correctly registered - go to Kansas VoterView. At Kansas VoterView, be sure and type in your full legal name and your current address. It will give you a new page listing your registration information and where your polling place will be in the upcoming election.

Do you need to update your registration? There are two ways to change your voter registration information:

  • Changing the information on your driver's license will automatically update your voter registration information and your certificate, or,
  • Completing a new voter registration application and returning it to the Secretary of State's office or your county election office. If you are updating your registration, you will want to also know what the deadlines are. Please check this schedule.

Are you moving within the same county? If you move to a new address within the same county you should update your information as soon as possible. If you move after the registration deadline you can still vote a complete ballot at the precinct assigned to your old address. When you go to vote you will be required to complete a new voter registration application.

Are you moving to a different county in Kansas? If you are moving to a different county in Kansas before the registration deadline you must complete a new voter registration application and provide identification. If you move to a different county after the registration deadline you will need to vote at the precinct assigned to your old address. At that time you will be required to complete an affidavit of former precinct residence and a new voter registration application.

Are you moving to Kansas from a different state? If you move to Kansas and the deadline to register has not passed, you should register in order to vote a regular ballot. If you move to Kansas less than 45 days before an election and the deadline to register to vote has passed, you may vote a president-only ballot. Kansas law requires that you possess the qualifications of a Kansas elector, except for the residency requirement. You are not required to have been registered in the state of your previous address. To vote a president-only ballot, you must go to your county election office by noon the day before the general election and complete the required forms. You may then cast your ballot for president at the county election office.

Don't forget your identification. State law requires that all first-time voters show identification at one of four points in the registration process:

  • at the time of registration;
  • after registration and before Election Day;
  • on Election Day; or
  • after Election Day and before the county canvass.

Acceptable forms of identification include: driver's license or nondriver's ID card; bank statement; paycheck; government check; utility bill; and other government documents such as Medicare or Medicaid documents, military ID, student ID or a passport.

Poll Locations: After registering, you will receive a voter registration certificate which shows the location of your voting place. To find out online if you are correctly registered or to learn about where you are to go to vote on Election Day - go to Kansas VoterView. At Kansas VoterView, be sure and type in your full legal name and your current address. It will give you a new page listing your registration information and where your polling place will be in the upcoming election. If, after checking your certificate, you are still unsure where to vote, check this list of poll locations or contact me for further assistance.
