Staab Announces Plan
to Save Space in the Courthouse
Press Release: July 28, 2008
Dottie Staab, Democratic
Candidate for Ellis County Clerk, today announced her plan to solve
the controversy surrounding the proposed expansion of County
offices. Staab, in a press release, announced her plan that would
save huge amounts of space in the courthouse, this saving 8$-$10
million in proposed expenditures by the proponents of buying and
refitting the Hadley Center.
If elected, Staab would ask the County Commission and other elected
office holders to designate her as the Records and Documents and
Information Officer for Ellis County. With this new authority, she
will digitalize all county records and documents, starting with all
of the records of the County Clerk's office.
"Much of the floor space in the Ellis County Courthouse is consumed
by shelving, file cabinets and records and documents that can be
replaced by one personal computer, if the records are properly
scanned and saved. Every office in the courthouse has a printer,
copier, and other space eating equipment which is redundant,
outmoded, expensive to maintain, and unnecessary under my plan,"
explained Staab.
Staab pointed out that the county is likely to realize other savings
from scanning and storing, such as better use of labor and
workforce. “Many county employees that now are buried under piles of
paperwork will one day be able to focus on serving their offices and
providing better customer service in other ways.”
"Preliminary research tells us that the initial startup costs of
going to a Less Paper system will be modest, especially compared to
the capital costs and maintenance costs of adding 35,000 square feet
of office space and spreading government out even further,
geographically. People should have one-stop shopping in government,
too, and if we can figure out a way to keep all elected offices
under one roof, they will have that," Staab explained.
Adding that her "plan for responsible leadership on this issue is an
example of what can be done by using common sense for the common
good.” Staab asked interested people to go to her website,
DottieStaab.com, to see
more details of this and other proposals. She hopes that Ellis
County residents will interact with her at her website and make
comments and suggestions.
